Liberation of Avnevi

Located in the Inner Kartli region of the country, in the vert heart of the historic Georgia, Avnevi is home to a medieval church dating back to the 14th century, one of the rare Georgian churches remaining of this period.
Unfortunatly, this small town is under a troubling threat which menaces to destroy not only the town and its inhabitants but also the entire cultural heritage of the region.
In August 2008, as the political crisis between Georgia and Russia culminated into a 5 day-war that resulted in the deaths of hundreds of individuals and the destruction of countless numbers of historic sites, Avnevi turned out to be in the center of an ethnical conflict between Ossetian militias and Georgian rural families, most of whom were expelled and now live in IDP camps.
Today, Avnevi has been cleared off its traditional, welcoming Georgian population. Its historic church is being threatened of destruction by the new Russian army-backed South Ossetian authorities that challenge the Georgian heritage.
By signing this following petition, you help sending a strong message to the authorities of the illegitimate government of South Ossetia and the government of the Russian Federation to stop the occupation of Avnevi. You also help the Georgian people to reclaim their pre-war positions in Avnevi.
Finally, this petition sends a message of support to the IDPs coming from this region of the world and that were dramatically seperated from their Ossetian friends, families, and their property that guaranteed a source of food and water.
Each and every IDP and inhabitant of Avnevi is looking toward you and your voice for their future...
