Dear Honorable Charles Grassley,

On behalf of the Equal Justice Foundation at the University of Iowa College of Law, the signatories listed below are writing to ask for your support of legislation designed to eliminate the debt burden of graduating law school students who go to work for public interest or government employers. Specifically, we ask for your support of two bills currently before the Senate, including the Student Debt Relief Act of 2007 (S. 359) and John R. Justice Prosecutors and Defenders Incentive Act of 2007 (S. 442).

The undersigned students, faculty, and administration at the University of Iowa, College of Law are interested in expanding the types of loan repayment assistance programs (LRAPs)such as those proposed in S. 359 and S. 442available to graduates of the College. We believe that this legislation will help support students already planning to work in the public interest and government sectors, as well as encourage additional law school students to go into public interest and government work. Moreover, such a federal LRAP would help stem the brain drain of Iowa law graduates who move out-of-state partly because other states and their employers offer superior loan repayment assistance.

The average debt of law school students graduating from the University of Iowa, College of Law is $63,798, and fifteen percent of the 2005 graduating class went into public interest or government work. Although there are a few opportunities for loan forgiveness through the University of Iowa, College of Law, they are extremely limited in the number of individuals supported and the type and amount of loans forgiven. As a result, we are asking you to supportby becoming a co-sponsor of the two billsan expanded federal LRAP program for lawyers entering public interest and government employment.

We appreciate your continued support and hope you will sign onto this important initiative.
