My E3 Most Anticipated: Broken Age

by Tim Clark, Games Group Editor for Future Publishing

Sports games often get short shrift at E3, lost in the ear-molesting maelstrom of shooters and actioners. But the transition from one generation to the next represents a crucial time for major sports games. By being better prepared for the last jump, EA was able to put critical as well as commercial distance between its FIFA series and Konami's PES. The Japanese game has struggled to recover ever since. So with another step change in power looming, what now? There's little point precisely rendering every blade of grass, given everyone plays with the camera zoomed out.

Well, judging by what our chums at T3 saw on a recent visit to Vancouver, the new Ignite engine will be directed at making the range of animation vastly deeper, and therefore the gameplay look and feel more like actual football. I suspect that means there'll be no single 'silver bullet' new feature, but incremental improvement across the board - as has been the case with FIFA for the last few years. There's a doubt, though, and it's one that almost all the major franchises face: with cross-generation development an economic necessity, how much will the current consoles hold back the pace of change on the new ones.

Or in other words: are we just going to get 1080p versions of the same games, and is that enough to make next-gen really seem exciting? Honestly, I'd settle for completely revamped menus. It takes a minimum of 17 button presses to go from one manager mode match to the next, and that hardly says hot sexy future tech to me. We'll find out how significant the next gen features - if indeed there are any - will be when we go hands-on in LA on 11 cheap fifa 14 coins June. Hopefully the next gen versions amount to more than just an expensive second strip.
