The Department of Education is planning to erect a high security fence around Phoenix Primary School, Hamilton Hill. These security fences are very ugly and are normally topped with three strands of barbed wire, as per nearby Southwell Primary School and Hamilton Senior High School.
The beautiful grounds of this school have long served as a local park and play area, where families bring their children and grandchildren on weekends and school holidays. We believe it is unnecessary to lock up this beautiful community resource. We also believe the fence will look very ugly and will send the message to prospective residents that this is not a desirable neighbourhood to live in, which isn't the case, possibly lowering property values.
The school cites as reasons for the fence to be an increase in vandalism and student safety. Community members believe that together we can come up with better solutions than this fence.
