We, the undersigned wish to voice our opposition to the Whangamata Marina project. We support the actions of the Honourable Minister of Conservation Chris Carter and the stance he took in halting the project.
The bases of our objections are:
1)The area is inappropiate for marina use, being the area designated is a natural infill.
2)The marina will have detrimental ongoing effects to kaimoana (shellfish)which tangata whenua tradionally collect to suppliment their diet.
3)No confidence in the Environment Courts ruling, evidence that was submitted has been dismissed out of hand by the Environment Court, dismissing evidence given by tangata whenua and surfers.
4)The Treaty of Waitangi protects the rights of tangata whenua, in the protection of their 'taonga', namely the pataka (foodstore) of Tangaroa (God of sea and sea creatures).
5)The Foreshore and Seabed Act is supposed to protect the rights of all New Zealander's under this proposed marina a part of the foreshore will become private property, we object to this strongly, One Law for All.
