To the University of Canterbury Student Association (UCSA),
On Sunday the 21st, the University of Canterbury Engineering Society (ENSOC) held its annual ‘Roundie 500’ event themed ‘as controversial as possible’. This event featured costumes and decorated cars that were racist (blackface used to denigrate Ebola victims and blatant Islamaphobia) and sexist (non-consensual leaked images of various celebrities, transphobic messages, and insults directed towards other UC affiliated clubs including UC FemSoc). These actions are offensive to many students and members of the community.
This event condoned and supported by the UCSA by promoting the event on facebook, and the active participation of UCSA executive members, However, the event violates the UCSA Constitution. (1.3.2: ‘[t]o commit to representing all student diversity, including culture, religion, gender, ability, age, and sexual orientation, and to supporting equality and theory and practice’ ).
In order to live upto the UCSA constitution, The undersigned believe the UCSA needs to:
Publicly condemn and issue an apology for the inciting and encouraging racist and sexist imagery by an affiliate of UCSA, and for the UCSAs role in the event.
Redirect some funding from ENSOC to: Canterbury Justice For Palestine, Otautahi Womens refuge and/or the Christchurch Refugee and Migrant Center.
