Ottawa Hills High School Technology

Ottawa Hills High School is a school that offers a great use of technology. Unfortunately, the school locks us down on the use of the tech. Ottawa Hills High School (OHHS for short) has not only restricted us as students on the sites we can visit, the applications we can use, the recording of our use of the computers, the locked down wifi network, the unfair agreement upon using the technology, they dont even take any ideas of ours into consideration about what they can do to improve our learning experience.

Not only are students restricted, but as well as teachers. With all the recording, cheating software, as well as many others installed the school didn't keep one thing in mind. Are these additions helping, or are they just an annoyance? A computer lab teacher, who will stay anonymous, does not like that whenever we print something, our name, date, and time are printed at the bottom of EVERY PAGE. If the school says our "formatting" is important, how about you remove the one thing that is killing that formatting technique?

This petition is to show OHHS that, as older mature students, and as adults, we can handle this freedom, and the school should at least try it out, and see if it works.

- Create an open, public wireless network for students to use for their own use. Such as connect their iPods, computers etc. Allow the network to be turned on during lunch time, before school, and after school. The school has the tech, but doesn't do it.

- LAY OFF THE WEB BLOCKER! Come on seriously? Google was blocked at one point under "Games". Seriously!? Remove the web blocker, or at least block main sites like Facebook, Myspace, Twitter, and adult content sites. So what if a student sends a email? Remember, that the network is enabled during their FREE TIME, and not during school time.

- STOP WATCHING OUR SCREEN AND TAKING SCREENSHOTS OF WHAT WE ARE DOING! I find this an invasion of privacy. Yes, we are using your computers, and your property, but can you at least let us know that you are recording us, or taking pictures of what we are doing?

- Get rid of TurnItIn. I was allowed to view what our documents look like on the teachers end. TurnItIn, find obvious words, just as Bob Wells. Ok, Wells, was said to be copied. Well, Wells is a popular name, and it made it look worse then what it is. Its a unfair, bugged system, that should not be supported.

- Revise the Terms of Service for using the schools "tech". Teachers use it as a threat against us whenever we do something such as logging into a personal account. Whats the issue with that? Let us do it on the public Wifi network.


If the school does these ideas, they will not believe how many students will take advantage of the option.
