We the undersigned petition the House of Commons to Develop Selective Dorsal Rhizotomy surgery in the UK to the level of refinement experienced in the USA and to commit to explore it as a method to reduce spasticity in cerebral palsy sufferers.
The US version of the operation has been refined over thousands more operations than in the UK and enjoys much more positive results. The US version is much less invasive than the UK version and subsequently enjoys a much shorter recovery time.
With the lifetime costs of an Intrathecal Baclofen pump estimated at almost £1million, Selective Dorsal Rhizotomy is clearly the lower cost and higher success option.
The economics behind the funding of this operation are with conservative treatment, baclofen administered orally and physio therapy delivered in the most part by carers, the burden on the NHS is minimal, however ineffective treatment at an early stage will grossly impact these individuals in later life. In many cases increasing the burden on the state and adversely impacting their quality of life.
Please help us get the right treatment made available, not the treatment that fits the budget.
