On April 14th, 2010, City of Binghamton Mayor Matt Ryan announced he had unilaterally decided to install a cost of war counter on city hall to show how much money has been wasted on the US Military since September 11, 2001. This sign will be installed on the exterior of Binghamtons city hall allowing a public facility to be used for private, third-party political statements without the approval of city council or after holding a public meeting to solicit input from city residents. We disapprove of the mayors actions for many reasons including the trivialization of the sacrifices that service members have made, the focusing on the monetary cost of war instead of the human cost of war, the lack of respect the mayor has shown to those who oppose this idea, the use of public facilities to promote paid, political statements by special interest groups, and the fact that the mayor has acted irresponsibly by subverting open meeting laws, by usurping the role of city council and by opening up the side of city hall to messages of all types, including hate messages.
