Reduce the Age of Voting to 5 and Running for office to 18

Considering that voting is at an all time low, where only half of eligible voters cast their ballots during a Presidential election and less during other years.

Considering that 18-25 year old citizens consistently bring up the rear in voting participation due to cynicism and lack of relating to the candidates.

And considering that many experts suggest the best way to encourage good habits is to start at an early age.

We, the people behind the Student Rights Party, petition the White House and Congress to reduce the age of voting to 5 and the age for running for any office to 18.

I understand this will require a lot of thought and some radical changes. But consider that our country was founded on thought and radical changes. It was very radical to consider breaking away from Britain and its laws, but this country survived its tests and has thrived for over 200 years.

By teaching our children the values of democracy at an early age, not only do we ensure the future of democracy, but we also instill pride in our country and our future as well.

By lowering the age of candidacy, 18 to 25 year olds will have greater incentive to vote (especially if one of their own is running for office) and will participate more actively in campaigning, fundraising, and other things that will help democracy now and in the future.
