We note with delight that the TV series Days of Hope has now been released on DVD as part of a boxed set ‘Ken Loach at the BBC’. However, we feel it is nothing short of a scandal that Days Of Hope has never been re-shown on the BBC
.
Written by Jim Allen, produced by Tony Garnett and Directed by Ken Loach, this series deserves a wider audience and it is a tragedy that the BBC have yet to re-screen it. We feel this is a political decision as the subject material is considered controversial, exposing the class based nature of British society in the early 20th Century.
Ken Loach: “This was a four part series for the BBC written by Jim Allen and produced by Tony Garnett, whom I worked with over a long period and whose partnership is immensely valuable to me. Days of Hope was the story of the beginning of the labour movement from the First World War to the General Strike, a period when all the problems that are inherent in the labour movement first emerged”.
This petition calls for an explanation of the continuing failure of the BBC to re-screen this series and requests that plans for re-screening are taken forward as soon as possible.
