For over 25 years Te Herenga Waka o Orewa has faithfully served the Hibiscus Coast Community with its advice, expertise and knowledge of Māori Culture and its many facets. Since securing the lease in 2007 for the current site in Silverdale, we have established a Wharenui and been host to numerous community events both Māori and non-Māori. Our 5 year tenure here has proven the benefits and evident ongoing need for a pan-tribal marae on the Hibiscus Coast.
Recently, Te Herenga Waka o Orewa was given notice by The Ministry of Education to vacate the premises by April next year. Although having formerly tendered our interests in acquiring this land for purposes of marae, we have been excluded from all consultations in regards to its eminent sale.
Please support our cause by signing this petition to compel local and central authorities of government to:
1. Support us in retaining the land we currently reside on and/or
2. Provide us with alternative land where we can relocate and continue providing our services to the wider community.
