Anyone who has been reading the news lately probably would have noticed that the Toronto Mayor, Rob Ford himself, is trying to drastically change the wages and working conditions for most, if not all, unionized workers. This includes having them pay for 95% of their drug plan (a complete 180 from what they currently pay), only protecting jobs for people with at least 22 years of seniority (think close to retiring soon anyways) and giving a 30 day notice before laying someone off as opposed to the 3 month notice that would have been. What many people don't realize is that CUPE 416 is not asking for a pay increase, but rather a freeze in wages...Rob Ford is facing a pay increase from the $168,000 salary he already has. But wait, he "doesn't want to accept it" and is encouraging other councillors to do the same. Sorry Rob, not good enough! What he seems to forget is that the middle class workers and even the lower class workers make up the majority of the population and any decision he makes to drastically decrease the working conditions for them could quite possibly affect the economy. He probably won't care, he's making in a year what many people make in 3 years...that is before the government takes upwards of 30% of it. So fellow Torontonians and people of the world it is time to take a stand against this! Please take the time to sign this petition and send it on to all of your friends. Who knows, 30 seconds of your time could finally give us the voice we need :)
P.S. Don't be afraid to write Rob Ford a personal (civilized of course) message either. He can be reached at:
