Save Andersonstown Library

We the undersigned strongly oppose plans announced by LibrariesNI to close the Andersonstown branch later this month. The decision follows years of underinvestiment and, if implemented, would have a devastating effect on the 80,000 people in its vicinity, and especially on young people and seniors in an area already suffering from high levels of social deprivation. In a time of economic crisis and rising unemployment, Libraries NI should be seeking ways to extend, rather than withdraw, their service.

We believe:
1. That the consultation carried out by LibrariesNI was fundamentally flawed, and the results manipulated in order to push through closures across the city;

2. That the Andersonstown Library must be kept open until guarantees are in place that it will either be renovated or replaced with a new facility in walking distance to current users;

3. That while we welcome the possibility of a facility at the former Andersonstown barracks site, this is not an alternative to maintaining the current branch;

4. That the provision of a temporary mobile book service is not an alternative to keeping the branch open.
