We are also concerned at the potential of any new non-contextual construction to affect the historical significance of 23rd and 22nd Streets and the surrounding area by obstructing the views from the Battle Hill Monument in Green-Wood Cemetery, a significant site in American history, where the first battle of the Nation was fought in 1776 and where a monument of Minerva saluting the Statue of Liberty in the harbor (a line of sight directly down 23rd St.) was dedicated in 1920 to honor the thousands of Washingtons soldiers who were buried where they fell.
We are concerned that this neighborhood is under siege by developers who are building non-contextual multi-story buildings in Greenwood Heights/South South Slope area at an increasingly rapid pace, and we wholeheartedly support the rezoning of this site from its current R6 to the new R6B contextual zoning (which would mandate that new construction conform to the context of the block).
