Please help support the following proposed law known as Shib's Law. This law is being proposed in Memory of James G. Miller, a 22 year veteran firefighter of the Sesser Fire Protection District, also known as "Shib". He lost his life on July 27th, 2007 at 4:14am while on an emergency call on Interstate 57, when he was struck by a Greyhound bus because the traffic was not stopped. He leaves behind a wife and 2 children.

Proposal:

Construction/State workers, as important as they are have protection under a law that states if one of them gets hit, the driver can be fined up to $10,000 and serve up to 14 years in jail. Emergency personnel deserve to be covered the same as construction/state workers. Emergency personnel put their lives on the line every time they respond to a call to save lives and or property. Even though Scott's Law is in effect, we feel that the penalties are not stiff enough. Under Scott's Law the offender may be fined up to $10,000 and lose their drivers license for up to 2 years, NO JAIL TIME!

Emergency personnel should have the authority to close any Illinois roadway for the safety of personnel working on scene of the incident at any point in time if needed. This will ensure the safe return of all personnel home. It will allow personnel to complete the task at hand effectively and as quickly as possible without having to worry about traffic.
