We live, work, shop, visit or travel along Winston-Salem and Forsyth County roadways. The clutter, size, flashing and disarray of the signs in this area are distracting, unappealing and generally obstructive of the otherwise natural beauty of the area.

We support the adoption of UDO-164, the proposed new sign ordinance, to reduce the maximum height and area of on-premises signs, restrict the frequency of copy changes on electronic signs, and amortize or phase in these changes within ten years at the latest, without exempting any existing signs.

This is the right thing to do for this community, because it puts into effect the written goals of the community:
* The Legacy Action Plan adopted in 2001 anticipates signs less dominant and more in scale with their location
* The City Council Strategic Plan adopted in 2002 anticipates improving the appearance of the area streets and throughways by changing the on-premises sign regulations
* A 2001 Citizen Survey by the Community Appearance Commission listed the appearance of area roadways and sign clutter as important issues for improvement
* Attractive communities, including their roadways, are inviting to residents, businesses, and visitors alike. They encourage not only economic vitality but also offer a less stressful and safer environment for its residents and visitors alike.

Please adopt UD0-164 without further revision.
