The Specs Howard School of Broadcast Arts Transmitter

To have a broadcast school, without a transmitter, would seem unusual to most people. However, that is exactly the case with the Specs Howard School of Broadcast Arts, in Southfield,Michigan (www.specshoward.edu). While this school has many other great learning facilities for students, everything taught there is theorhetical. As a student of Specs Howard, I find this particularly troubling. Why do other schools, who are not specializing in broadcasting, have transmitters, and Specs Howard does not? Every time I have asked this question, the answer is always that the school simply does not have enough money. I don't claim to know how much money is required to keep the school operating, and the building a safe place to work in. I do know that the tuition is fairly high. Depending on when you enrolled, and how long you plan to attend Specs Howard, the tuition could cost a prospective student up to $14,000, for a maximum program length of 1 year. Even if you only attend the school for 8 months, your tuition could be as high as $12,000. There are no two or four-year programs at Specs Howard. Students have the option between an 8-month or 12-month program. In any given classroom, there are anywhere from 15 to 45 students. There are classes running all day, 5 days per week.

I can't imagine that, with the tuition from all of these students, that Specs Howard could not get a transmitter,or several transmitters. Not only would this give the school more credibility as a broadcasting school,it would also allow the students to actually work "on the air". Additionally, this would give the general public a taste of what is being taught at the school. I would imagine that if some of the shows were broadcast locally, this would encourage people to attend Specs Howard.

If you are a current student, alumni, prospective student,or a member of the general public (who is curious about what actually goes on at a broadcasting school),please sign this petition to urge Specs Howard School of Broadcast Arts to purchase at least one transmitter.

Thank you!
