Every week in Newfoundland and Labrador we see Automotive Drivers get arrested and charged for Highway Traffic Act infractions. In most cases we see “repeat” offenders who laugh in the face of the justice system and mock us as a society. These repeat offenders in many instances amassed thousands in fines, have been charged numerous times, have had many court appearances, and have been taken from the streets with vehicles impounded. etc.
Then, after a warm meal, and another visit through the legal circus, they walk freely amongst us to re-offend with little consequence. The point is…, all of this “processing” is at a cost to the tax payer. Aka You !
We see drunks, we see speeding, we see high speed chases, etc. Until one of these persons perfect the criminal activity with actually killing or hurting someone, nothing gets done! Understandably, these repeat criminals figure “what is one more fine or charge to someone who does not care, is not going to pay it, and knows they will simply have a schedule conflict to make the next court case”.
Newfoundland has a revolving door Court Room. it’s Highway Traffic Act is allowing this menace to walk free. The latest round of rotating door syndrome is a drunk driver who is now facing his third charge of impaired driving in less than two months.
I call for your signature on this petition to wake the law makers up! Let’s get 5000 signatures to show the people we elected that we have had enough. In signing, we are saying make changes to the HTA to stop this no consequence repeat offending.
