All Children with Down Syndrome Deserve Resource hours in School

We, the undersigned, demand that ALL children with Down Syndrome have access to the maximum allocation of resource hours.
We believe there is an inequality and discrimination to the current system which requires children with Down Syndrome to have a second disability to access vital resource hours as per Spec Ed circular 02/05.
We are calling on the Minister for Education to recognise Down Syndrome in its entirety and in its own right. Children with Down Syndrome cannot and must not be categorised as having a mild/moderate learning disability, as this does not reflect all aspects of Down Syndrome. These children were diagnosed at birth with Down Syndrome and this must be acknowledged and reflected when considering their need for support and resource hours when attending mainstream school.
In Ireland, however, education policy places children with Down Syndrome in an unfair position by not supporting their education to the degree that other disabilities are supported.
Children with Down Syndrome are full of potential, please afford them every educational opportunity to become the best that they can be. They are worth the investment, please offer them the support they require.
Acknowledge their achievements to date by building on them, nurturing and supporting these
achievements.
