Harvards leadership in academic research and achievement is recognized worldwide. The universitys recent record in the realm of human development and respect for all members of the Harvard community is more ambiguous, however.
We urge President Summers to exercise intelligent judgment by recognizing the basic needs and rights of all service workers on campus, including janitors and security guards. Harvards service staff, comprised almost entirely by people of color, deserves more full-time work and living wages that can support a family.
At present, in the absence of full-time jobs, many janitors like Yanic Volmar must work multiple jobs just to survive. Security guards, on the other hand, have such low wages that they are working overtime constantly to make ends meet.
Harvard should also renew its commitment to parity in wages and benefits between in-house service workers and contract workers. As it stands, many contract security guards make less than the guards directly employed by Harvard. Allowing security guards to be represented by the union of their choice is the only way to guarantee that their rights are respected.
We ask all members of the Harvard community to support our appeal to President Summers and the Harvard administration.
