James A. Michener wrote, "I was favorably impressed by the Civilian Conservation Corps, which had, so far as I could see, a faultless program in which young people could do constructive work for their communities while earning a modest salary. I would have hopes for such a program, were one to be reinstituted now."
The CCC along with the WPA was a budget cut in wartime America in 1942 and was deemed non-viable in a defense based economy as well as a relief program! A contemporary federal report by Conrad Wirth of the National Park Service in 1944 stated that the CCC was extremely cost effective and accomplished in one decade the equivalent of over 50 years in conservation and restoration work of our natural resources. We need the CCC now more than ever! With our many idle youth, indebted college grads, non-violent felons, veterans returning from Iraq and jobless Americans all could find a helping hand from Uncle Sam. They would work hard for a meaningful purpose. Day to day work would consist of planting tree saplings to being dispatched to help fight natural disasters from Puerto Rico to Micronesia. Service could be an alternative to military service.
Members would live in a worry free environment and receive a modest wage, living quarters, meals, transportation, work clothing, workers compensation, medical, dental benefits with paid holidays for voting. After completion of service, all would earn the right to receive an education package similar to the GI Bill of 1944. All federally funded programs that overlap this agency would be absorbed.
With reactivation, many would enjoy the rough, hardy life, and the natural beauty of the settings in which they might work and earn their first pay. Members of the CCC would be better citizens. Imagine a world building unity in peace with the creation of similar initiatives throughout the world. The USA would again be a beacon for the World to follow. Men and Women would mature and develop into well-rounded human beings ready to make positive contributions in society.
