Commuters For a Better Metro Ventura Line Train Schedule

On January 29, 2008 the LA City Council met for the entire day to discuss a resolution for growing traffic problems in Los Angeles. One part of that solution should be to maximize usage of the infrastructure already in-place. Currently the Ventura Line of the Metrolink runs on a bare bones schedule. Rearranging the existing train schedule or increasing the frequency of trains would enhance the likelihood that commuters traveling to the San Fernando Valley would use mass transportation.

Case-in-point, the California Department of Toxic Substances Control's regional office, staffed by 135 people, recently relocated from Glendale to Chatsworth. Many of us want to use the Metrolink, however, the train schedule does not accomodate individuals working the average workday. The trains that originate from Union Station arrive in the Northridge/Chatsworth area at 7:30 a.m., 7:55 a.m., and 9:28 a.m. There are only TWO return trips in the afternoon from Northridge/Chatsworth to the Glendale area: 2:59 p.m. and 5:30 p.m. These times are either too early or too late for the majority of our staff. The change that is needed would not necessarily require additional trains, it may simply require a better look at the existing schedule and some adjusting. If trains were more readily accessible and the schedule better coordinated for the working commuter, many people who are adding congestion on the roads could move from their cars to the trains.

We also request that Metrolink and LADOT do a better job coordinating their schedules. The DASH that is meant to service the area we work in is not conducive to arriving or departing the train stations within time periods that make sense to people who have schedules to follow.
