Compulsory drug testing for politicians and senior public servants

If welfare recipients are to be subject to mandatory drug testing in order to qualify for welfare payments, which are drawn from the public purse, then politicians and senior public servants should also submit to drug and alcohol testing. If they are serious about tax payer's money being distributed in this fashion, and that the government should have the right to encroach to such an extent into the private lives of individuals, then they should also be prepared to lead by example and labour under the same presumption of guilt. And should also be willing to accept consequences which correspond in magnitude to the influence, power and privilege that their position, afforded by tax payers' contributions, allows them to enjoy. This is only fair considering that those dependent on welfare do not share the same privileges as politicians and senior public servants, but are for the most part from lower socioeconomic classes and backgrounds of disadvantage.
