Demand that ABC and "Desperate Housewives" Take a Stand for Creative Freedom & Against Censorship

We are writing to show support for the uncompromised quality of one of the best written shows on television, and opposition to needless censorship.
Even if the comment made by the character of Susan on the season premiere of Desperate Housewives was discriminatory or hurtful, it was the comment of a fictional character, indicating her opinion. It was not a statement of belief from ABC any more than comments made by the character of Archie Bunker on the classic "All in the Family" were indicitive of the beliefs of the creative team on that show.
For ABC to apologize and consider even for a moment editing the aforementioned comment out of future airings or DVD releases is fundamentally wrong. It is the functional equivalent of giving in to demands that copies of "To Kill a Mockingbird" be burned because some of the characters presented are racist, or demanding that all DVD copies of "Gone With the Wind" be taken off the market due to an unfavorable portrayal of minorities.
As free individuals capable of appreciating artistic expression and opposed to removing all realism and diversity of thought from television characters, we fully endorse the season premiere of Desperate Housewives exactly as aired, just as we support the artistic value of "To Kill a Mockingbird," "All in the Family," and "Gone With the Wind."
We demand that this premiere not be edited for repeat airings or for DVD release, as doing so would compromise the artistic integrity of both "Desperate Housewives" and ABC. We refuse to let vocal minorities continue to turn mole hills into mountains while the voices of rational and discerning individuals remain unheard.
