Ferrets

Ferrets in California have been illegal for a while. Does anyone know of an actual reason? Not very many people can. Ferrets are illegal in California and Hawaii. Californians are fighting this. People seem to think ferrets are these ferocious beasts. Not even close! Ferrets are cute cuddly indoor animals that sleep most of their lives. Ferrets pose no threat to other wild life and are not an endangered species. In California, if Fish and Game finds out you own a ferret they make a huge deal out of it. Not allowing ferrets violates Californians right to private property (Article 1 of the State Constitution). Code sections 654 and 655 say that private property includes all domesticated animals. A common misconception is the fear that ferrets will breed and over populate too quickly. This isn't true. Other states spay and neuter their ferrets before they even reach the market. Why can't we be like other states. Some pet stores even illegally sell them. Some police officers don't bust people because they also think it's wrong to make ferrets legal. What is the true point of making them illegal. Five-hundred thousand or more ferrets already live in California, more than any other state, even the ones who allow ferrets. The law that ferrets are illegal has been around since 1933. Ferrets aren't beastly creatures that go scavenging for chickens. As a community and a state let's make ferrets illegal and stop this political nonsense that has been going on for over 15 years! Also, if you care about ferrets in California; I recommend also emailing (or writing your: State of California Governor, Local State Assemblyman (send email to as many as your area has) , State Senator, or anyone else who has high political power. Previous Governors even help. Also, if you're not from California but care about ferrets or if you travel to California often or at all and you have ferrets I also recommend emailing the people listed above. You can sign this petition if you're out of state. If you travel to California with ferrets this law will one day effect you. We hope to have 5,000 signatures before February 2007.
