Currently in the U.S., we, as Americans, dispose of more than 25\% of the food that we prepare, and an approximately 96 billion pounds of food is wasted every year. Food waste has become the third largest waste stream in the United States. Of all this waste that is generated, we as Americans only currently manage to recycle and recover less than three percent of all the food that is wasted. The rest of this food is dumped into landfills where it releases massive amounts of greenhouse gases and decomposes un-naturally.
The biggest culprits for food waste are restaurants and large food corporations. If we could target these mass producers of food waste, than one of the largest waste streams could diminish and disappear! Currently in the U.S and more specifically in California there are no laws (besides that inside of San Francisco), which mandate the recycling and composting of food waste. All we have to do is pass a law that mandates the composting of food waste for all major corporations and food industries (including restaurants) and we could we be on our way to saving our planet and our lifestyle. But something needs to happen and it needs to happen now! Please sign this petition to help spark a movement towards reducing our waste and imprint on this beautiful planet!
