We the undersigned express our gravest concern to Vancouver Park Board with respect to the proposed development of a lit artificial turf sports field at Jericho Park.
-We remind you that Jericho Park is a beautiful natural setting. The grassy area is used as more than just a sports field but as a casual area by families and area residents, by visitors to the youth hostel, and by members of the sailing centre.
-We note that Jericho Park is immediately adjacent to a bird sanctuary. A lit sports field does not belong there.
-We worry that the night view for residents of the area will be permanently affected by the construction of lighting towers.
-We feel that Jericho Park is not well served by transit, and we fear for the effect of five times the vehicle traffic accessing this neighbourhood for use of the sports field in all 12 months of the year.
-We are troubled that existing sports users will be adversely affected by this development, as rugby is not played on artificial turf, and as Jericho Park is the original home field of ultimate.
-We express concern that the recommendation of the VFSF as an advisory group to Park Board staff clearly opposed the development of an artificial turf field at Jericho West (the proposed site for this development).
Hear our voices. We urge the Vancouver Park Board not to proceed with this development.
