ISLANDERS angry about proposed cuts to the beach lifeguard service are being urged to sign a new petition. The campaign has been launched by Andrew Hosegood, the owner of El Tico Beach Cantina in St Ouen’s Bay, and Nick Durbano, of Laneez Surf Centre. They say that they decided to act to demonstrate how strongly people felt about plans to slash the lifeguard budget and possibly bring in the RNLI to replace the professional lifeguards from the southern hemisphere who have patrolled Island beaches for 50 years. As the JEP revealed at the end of last month, Economic Development Minister Alan Maclean is reviewing the whole service as part of States-wide moves to reduce public spending.
