We are truly dismayed by our county's school board continued desire to eliminate foreign language instruction from elementary schools. Many studies have documented that exposure to any foreign language at an early age provides the best means to develop a life long aptitude for learning languages. Students who receive foreign language instruction demonstrate greater achievement in reading, vocabulary, and comprehension in English as measured by the Iowa Test of Basic Skills. These benefits have been documented across students of all backgrounds. Other studies have shown that students with foreign language instruction score better on verbal and nonverbal intelligence tests.
Fulton County schools are known for the high quality and diversity of the programs provided and the results these programs achieve for our kids. We believe the research shows that starting foreign language in elementary school is an important part of this past success and is essential to continued success.
As the world becomes more integrated, knowledge of a foreign language will help our children to be more competitive in the global market place. It will provide them not only with the needed language skill, but also with a fundamental understanding of other cultures. These are essential to promote understanding and teamwork in diverse groups.
As you make final decisions regarding next years budget, please take the time to research the topic and understand this issue thoroughly. Elementary foreign language instruction gives our kids higher academic achievement, immeasurable social benefits and its fun. Please do not take this program away.
We ask that you return elementary foreign language instruction to our schools before the final budget vote.
