Keeping Women's Options Open

Hospital in Winnipeg, Manitoba will be closed.
Some say the birthing ward is being closed due to safety issues. It
has been proven time, and time again, that outcomes for normal
pregnancies in normal women are better in a community hospital
(like the Vic) than in a tertiary centre (like HSC) and with a GP or
Midwife than an OB. Not a single study has ever shown the
contrary.
Others say the birthing ward being closed is due to financial strain.
This makes the most sense, but that does not mean it is right.
Who is going to pick up the cost when c-sections, equalling longer
hospital stays and more babies needing the NICU, rise? The private
rooms and home like atmosphere at The Victoria General Hospital aid in
having a natural birth. Put a labouring Mother in a room with 3 other
labouring women and over worked nurses, and she is going to be less
likely to have a natural delivery. More likely to have an epidural,
more likely to have a c-section, more likely to stay in the hospital
for 3 or more days ...
It's time the province thinks of families first.
We oppose the foreclosure of women's options when they give birth, as
exemplified by the closure of the Victoria GH Maternity Ward
