Dear President Obama,
we write directly to you because we are convinced that you are the only one that can make this gift to peace, putting an end to a lengthy and useless story of military spending.
The citizens of Vicenza, in the North-East of Italy, have been opposing the meaningless expansion of the US military base Ederle - Dal Molin for many years. This project was agreed upon by the Italian Government and your predecessor Gorge W. Bush and is a monument to the military paranoia of the cold war.
Many things have changed since then and many agree that the threats to US security are now elsewhere. We believe that new threats comes from the poverty of the many populations: it is here that terrorism develops – terrorism that has its roots in racism and colonialism, in the wars that the Europeans fought to prey on raw materials and fertile ground around the world.
Your election as President of the United States of America and your programme to return troops from war territories gives us hope also for the military base in Vicenza.
We dare say more: it would be revolutionary to dismantle the base and use the money that would thus be saved to finance schools, hospitals, medicine distribution, food, clean water projects in developing countries and in war zones.
It would be a means to finally say that the US choose PEACE instead of ARMS, the PROTECTION OF THE ENVIRONMENT instead of ECOLOGICAL DEVASTATION, SOLIDARITY instead of PROFIT, an ECONOMY OF PEACE instead of an ECONOMY OF WAR. You can make the world dream of peace again.
