State of Tennessee - MAKE ENDING CANCER A NATIONAL PRIORITY
WHEREAS, it is estimated that 12,700 Tennessee citizens will die in 2007 from cancer;
WHEREAS, it is estimated that some 28,440 new cases of cancer will be diagnosed in Tennessee;
WHEREAS, more than 1.3 million people in the United States will be diagnosed with cancer this year; and in 2007, it is expected that 559,650 Americans will die of cancer, equaling more than 1,500 people every day;
WHEREAS more than 10 million Americans are currently living with, through or beyond cancer;
WHEREAS, the American public should be alarmed at the number of deaths resulting from cancer, the number one disease killer following heart disease in the United States.
WHEREAS, the importance of public awareness and education programs of known healthy lifestyles that include proper nutrition, daily exercise, and the elimination of tobacco use and exposure to second hand smoke, may be critical to preventing certain types of cancer.
WHEREAS, the American people support increasing cancer research priorities through public and private funding in order to find a cure for cancer in our lifetime.
Resolved, That the State of Tennessee does hereby declare
MAKE ENDING CANCER A NATIONAL PRIORITY
