No Velodrome in Newcastle

This is a petition against the proposed plan for creating an olympic sized Velodrome in a public park in the small town of Newcastle, County Down, Northern Ireland.


The park is at the foot of the famous Mourne Mountains and the building the local council have proposed will compleatly spoil the beautiful landscape. The traffic and parking infrastructures in the town are already problamatic and cannot cope with the extra trafic the council say it will bring.


While most of the money for this project will be given to the council, the rate payers will still have to suffer a 1.3\% rise in councl rates to pay for the rest.


The indoor cycle racing that takes place in a velodrome is a highly specialised sport and is not something that the majority of local people could use.


With the building of a new health center in Islands Park this will soon be the only green, recreational area left in our town, please don't ruin it by building this Velodrome.
