Whereas there has been an announcement that patients will be permitted to smoke on the premises of our new hospital...
We believe our Public Hospital should be wholeheartedly dedicated to healing and health, and we view it as inappropriate to set aside areas on hospital premises for patients to engage in an activity that harms their health and impairs their healing, normalizes smoking as an acceptable social behaviour in our community, and wastefully consumes time and energy of hospital staff to manage.
Furthermore, we recognize the window of opportunity to establish the new facility as completely smoke free from the beginning will be the simplest and easiest transition for patients, (not waiting for 2 years as planned, when triggers in the new environment and the habit and culture of smoking have become well established there).
We respectfully request the Boards of the NEMHC and NBGH reconsider their decision and make our new hospital site completely smoke free from its opening day.
