Petition for Review of New University Scholars Programme Logo

On Saturday, 25th November 2006, an email was sent by the USP director, detailing the adoption of a new USP logo, which will replace the current one. The following reasons were cited as to why the new logo is a better one:
(i) The new logo carries the NUS logo. Someone who sees the logo will immediately associate USP with NUS, an established brand name within the global and local context. Our current logo does not allow for such positive, mutual association.
(ii) The new logo clearly spells out our name and has strong visual impact that draws ones eyes to the wordmark. The wordmark is also lined such that visually, one easily sees USP. All these features, as simple as they may seem, allow for easy recall. The new logo will therefore serve well to strengthen our USP brand, and is consistent with our URL change.
(iii) The new logo is monochromatic, meaning that it can adopt colors, giving us more flexibility in practical and creative applications.
While the first reason is definitely a positive reason which clearly defines the positive attributes of the new logo, the second and third reason are somewhat insufficient to justify the superiority of the new logo over the current one.
Firstly, the aforementioned wordmark is unclear. A person would be more likely to spot the whole, which is University Scholars Programme, rather than the USP wordmark. However, it cannot be denied that with the words occupying prominence in the logo, a clear association with NUS has been achieved.
Secondly, while the logo is monochromatic and definitely does provide the ability of colour adoption, it is somewhat aesthetically unpleasing and leaves little room for any form of colour improvement.
Furthermore, it was mentioned that an external branding company was engaged to assist USP in its re-branding process. The result that has surfaced in the logo actually showcases a somewhat over-simplistic design, and is easily mistaken for a lackluster effort. In fact, such a design does not identify well with USP students, nor does it reflect the true qualities that not only a USP or NUS student should possess, but in fact, any other human being in his or her strive for excellence.
The objective of this petition is thus as such:
1. To review the adoption of the new logo as the official logo over the current logo
2. To review the design of the new logo
3. To persuade for a more aesthetically pleasing logo that represents the true qualities that a USP student should possess
This petition does not advocate the non-abolishment of the current existing logo should there be a necessity, nor does it advocate any intentional disruption to USPs re-branding process and progress. This petition simply seeks its purposeful objectives as aforementioned.
We, the students of USP, therefore sincerely hope that the USP Administration would take our suggestions into serious consideration.
