Undergraduate medical education is meant to produce well-rounded physicians who can initiate work up, triage, and communicate intelligibly on the most common diseases seen in everyday lives.
Yet, many of us will graduate medical school remaining uncomfortable with triaging simple fractures. Many of us will graduate not knowing how to properly work up musculo-skeletal injuries, potentially leading to unnecessary imaging/radiation risk and rising health care costs.
We all know that musculo-skeletal medicine is one of the biggest topic in primary care and general medicine, yet it is under-emphasized in our curriculum.
In an aging population where there is more back pain/broken hip/osteoporosis/osteoarthritis than ever before, it is time that we spend more than 0 week in mod II focusing on bones and muscles! Medical students deserve to be better prepared!
