To: Representative Peter King, Chair, U.S. House of Representatives Homeland Security Committee:
As a person of conscience, I call upon the Homeland Security Committee of the U.S. House of Representatives to respect the civil and religious freedoms of Muslim Americans, and to refrain from allowing anti-Muslim witnesses to use committee hearings as a platform to promote their personally biased, derogatory, and unsubstantiated views of the Muslim American community and the religion of Islam.
The Muslim community of the United States is, by all social indicators, a growing and integral part of the interfaith mosaic of our diverse nation. Muslim organizations promote education, voting, wholesome family activities, and greater civic engagement by the collective Muslim community. We appeal to you to look at American Muslims and Muslim American organizations and mosques not as criminal suspects, or apologists for terrorism, but as important allies in the ongoing work to make America a safer and better place for all of us.
Our shared national concern for safety must not be tainted by racism, bigotry, or the unjustified targeting of an entire religious community.
