We are signing this petition in support of the proposed expansion of Urban Assembly Academy of Arts and Letters Middle School. Arts and Letters is currently a unique, successful middle school in our District, and we believe that the expansion to include grades K-5 would be an asset to our community.
We believe that UAAAL would be of particular interest for families to whom the following educational qualities are important:
- a nine year grade sequence
- small class sizes and low student/teacher ratio through Collaborative Team Teaching inclusion model
- mix of inquiry-based, experiential, and traditional teaching methods.
- use of arts and art-based concepts in classroom instruction
- a distinct integrated science and social studies curriculum
- a focus on development of key cognitive strategies
- a demonstration of attainment of knowledge beyond standardized tests through development of portfolio of work and presentations
- a focus on family and community involvement
- attention to whole child (mutually respectful relationships, ample physical activity & outdoor time, art, music & dance integrated into core curriculum)
We respect the needs of all existing schools in the District 13 school district and urge the Department of Education to make sure that space needs of all parties are taken into account.
