Portovenere, Cinque Terre and the Islands (Palmaria, Tino and Tinetto) (Italy) (C 826)

 

We refer  to the Committee Decisions document n. 37 COM 7B.78  and to the SOC report dated 2013  (State of Conservation)

Regardless of the events that took place during the flooding of October 25, 2011, we hereby would like to point out some serious problems to both, the environment and the health of the local community and  tourists who visit the area every year. 

In particular we refer to the pedestrian stretch that goes from Corniglia to Manarola. On this path there are in fact shacks built in the 70's used (at that time) as dormitory and that, unfortunately are rich of asbestos fiber. 

This problem has existed for about 40 years but apparently no one wants to take charge of it ! 

The attached photos clearly show the presence of asbestos in the barracks and in adjacent areas as well as some arson attacks by unknown assailants.

Needless to say that  the city and the local government have never done anything to clean up the area and despite the presence of thousands of tourists and children who go to the beach the local authorities have not even reported to the tourists the danger of asbestos with appropriate signs. 

Since local governments are totally heedless of the health of inhabitants and tourists we ask you to remove the Cinque Terre from the World Heritage Centre and to leave Portovenere , Palmaria and Tino Tinetto islands as beneficiaries of belonging to world heritage sites. 

We hope that this petition will serve to bring back the Cinque Terre well known as a lovely place but, above all healthy and safe for health.

Ci riferiamo alla decisioni del WHC committee ( documento n. 37 COM 7B.78) e alla relazione datata 2013 SOC (stato di conservazione) http://whc.unesco.org/en/decisions/5092   Indipendentemente dagli eventi che hanno avuto luogo durante l'alluvione del 25 ottobre 2011, con la presente desideriamo segnalare alcuni gravi problemi per l'ambiente e la salute della comunità locale e dei turisti che visitano la zona ogni anno.     In particolare ci riferiamo al tratto pedonale che va da Corniglia a Manarola nelle Cinque Terre . Su questo sentiero ci sono infatti baracche costruite negli anni '70 usati (a quel tempo) come dormitorio e che, purtroppo, sono ricchi di fibre di amianto.     Questo problema esiste da circa 40 anni, ma a quanto pare nessuno vuole farsene carico.   Le foto allegate mostrano chiaramente la presenza di amianto nelle baracche e nelle zone adiacenti, nonché alcuni incendi dolosi da parte di ignoti.     Inutile dire che l'amministrazione comunale e il governo locale non hanno mai fatto nulla per ripulire l'area e nonostante la presenza di migliaia di turisti e bambini che si recano alla spiaggia le autorità non hanno neppure allestito delle insegne che avvertissero della presenza di fibre di amianto nell'area.     Dal momento che i governi locali sono totalmente incuranti della salute degli abitanti e dei turisti vi chiediamo di rimuovere le Cinque Terre dalla lista dei luoghi sotto il patrocinio dell'UNESCO e di lasciare Portovenere, Palmaria e le isole Tino Tinetto come beneficiari di questo prestigioso titolo.   Speriamo che questa petizione servirà a riportare le Cinque Terre conosciute come un bel posto, ma, soprattutto, sano e sicuro per la salute di tutti.     Massimo Conti
