Nova Scotia- Women in Nova Scotia suffer poverty, violence and housing vulnerability in increasing numbers, yet governments are failing to take decisive action. The Women’s Action Coalition of Nova Scotia (WACNS) expects more from our governments and has launched a lobby campaign entitled “Women are Watching”. As Co-Chair, Christine Saulnier points out, “Gender is seldom considered when making policy. The result is the perpetration of long-standing and systemic inequities, which negatively affect the health and well-being of thousands of women, their families and their communities.” The “Women are Watching” campaign began October 19th when WACNS representatives met with the three major political parties in Nova Scotia to discuss the need to take action. On October 20th, we presented the first round of almost 1000 signed campaign postcards to the government, with many more to come. These postcards have been signed by women and their allies across the province in support of improving conditions for women. “The postcards are to serve as a simple reminder that women need to be on the public agenda because women matter, and women vote,” says Co-Chair, Lucille Harper. The Coalition has delivered a comprehensive list of expectations to government, and demanded a formal response from each of the parties by December 10, when the campaign ends. The list offers solutions and recommendations for making change and improving the lives of women in our province. The message is clear – women are watching and expecting change! See our lobby brief here: http://wacns.ca/WAW/lobbybrief.pdf Please sign below and hold your provincial government accountable to women.
