Mohandas Gandhi once said You must be the change you wish to see in the world

Another (modern day) man that has mesmerized the world, and captured the imagination of the people of this great nation to the point that they truly believe that anything is possible also believes that we (the people) have the innate ability to bring about the change needed to impact our lives in a positive way. Through his constant message of change, he was able to motivate, inspire, and unify a nation that was once deep rooted in prejudice, segregation, and social divide. He worked tirelessly in his effort to reignite the people of our country to believe that all was not lost. Although many people were facing a level of financial devastation never experienced in this country, he reinforced that we were not simply a number on the roles of a government gone wild. He challenged people of all ages, races, and socioeconomic backgrounds to unite on the platform of CHANGE! And through his honesty, humbleness, hard work, and sincere connection with the people, he was rewarded by an overwhelming majority of the electorate with the ultimate accolade of being voted in as the 44th President of the United States The man Im referring to is Barack Obama!

One way that we the people can ensure that Barack Obamas legacy and achievements are never lost over time is to start the process now of creating a holiday for him. By signing this petition we can send a clear message to our elected officials that the accomplishments hes attained, coupled with the fact that he directed the country to a new beginning by being elected the first man of African decent to lead the very country that once viewed those from Africa as mere property with no basic rights is testament to the fact that such an honor is deserved.

In addition to Mr. Obama achieving a goal that most (at some point) thought was totally unattainable mainly due to his race, he not only proved many of these people around the world (and at home) to be wrong, he was able to break down racial and social barriers that have long existed and in the process he began building bridges that will forever change the face our country. Through this new mindset and promise of ushering in a new era of change, this president has already begun to build a legacy that will be carried on for many generations to come.

In an effort to ensure that his legacy is never forgotten or relegated over time as a period of little importance with minimal impact on the country, we need to start the process now of preserving for all future generations, the milestone of this election and the racial unification that afforded us the opportunity to realize a change to a political system that by and large has lost focus on the needs of the people and is more ingrained in the interest of big business.

In the initial stages of this undertaking many will say it cant be done, why do we need a separate holiday for this president when we already have a Presidents Day. The fact is, many believe that Presidents Day encompasses recognition for all presidents, but it doesnt. At a federal level, Washingtons Birthday is the only official holiday for a president. Through a realignment of all holidays, in 1971 President Nixon signed an executive order bringing Washington and Lincoln day into the same and calling it Presidents Day, but officially its still in recognition of Washingtons Birthday. At present there are only 2 Americans that have federal holidays, George Washington and Martin Luther King, Jr., both of which were major framers in the direction of the country and are very well deserving of the honor. Considering the positive impact that Barack Obama has had on society thus far, and his proven ability to bridge the racial gap by changing the minds of many that have long held on to negative stereotypes, hes positively confirmed with them that its OK to be different because at the core were all Americans. This along with his other proven abilities is further evidence that he is framing the next stage in the evolution of the country and this should never be forgotten or marginalized.

Wouldnt it be great if this president could be rewarded again by the people of this nation by seeing a day set aside in his honor during his lifetime? While Martin Luther Kings family was able to see his day become a reality, George Washington wasnt honored until 70 years after his death. By gathering signatures now, were setting the stage to let our elected officials know that the people are speaking and we expect nothing less than action!!!
