Abolish Daylight Standard Time

We petition for the abolishment of "Daylight Standard Time" and a move to year round "Daylight Savings Time" in the United States. We propose that March 2008 be the final year we "Spring Forward", and that we then leave the clocks on Daylight Saving Time ever after.

The Pros obviously outweigh the Cons in this issue, and politics should be removed from the equation:

PROs (Reasons to do away with Standard time and have Savings time year round):

Could save as much as 100,000 barrels of oil daily. Could save electricity with less light usage, including for sports.
Because people will have more time to enjoy outdoor activities such as golf, walking, running, hiking, tennis, other sports and theme parks and will thus be healthier.
These days, many farmers work part time. That extra hour to work after they arrive home would be helpful to them. Note: Full time farmers may not benefit.
Light at end of day: helps depression, eyesight, seasonal disorders and more.
Eliminates that "going to work/school in dark and coming home in dark" problem, reducing road rage as people try to "beat sundown"
Benefits the economy. This would be ideal, since the economy has been limping along and the dollar getting devalued for so long. That, in fact, is reason enough to vote for it right there.
Reduces traffic accidents and increases traffic safety.

CONs (reasons to keep things as they are, with two disruptive time changes each year):

Children harder to wake up in darkness.
Airline industry claims it will cost millions of dollars to adjust schedules. (At the price of a ticket these days, we think they can afford it)
Many computers, clocks and gadgets automatically adjust for daylight saving time. Some of these devices will show incorrect times. Some computer software will have to be reprogrammed. Which would take all of ten minutes, so I'm not completely seeing the "con" here. Luckily patches and help disks can be made to handle this one time change and eliminate the "con" aspect here.
The fact that children would wait in dark for school bus used to be a con to parents, but these days most kids are required to be supervised during the wait by an adult, so that really eliminates this "con" as well.
Traffic accidents increase both during each of the two changes due to sleep deprivation and during Standard time due to constantly driving in darkness at both peak traffic times, especially at night when people are now in a hurry to get home for that last few minutes of sun.

As you can see, going to Daylight Savings Time permanently in March 2008 has obvious benefits for the economy, our health, our safety and more. Don't delay! Abolish Daylight Standard Time in 2008 for year round Daylight Savings Time!
