We, the undersigned individuals, on behalf of the suffering people of Burma, appeal to the United Nations Security Council and its members to take serious and tangible action on Burma. The people of Burma have suffered increasingly under the military dictatorship for more than 4 decades. This poses a demonstrated threat not only to the region but also to the larger international community. Without the intervention of the United Nations Security Council, the Burmese military regime will continue its human rights violations, oppression, and atrocities upon its people.
Our concerns are as follows:
1) The increasing deterioration of health and living standards, including an increasing number of deaths from treatable diseases such as TB, malaria, and diarrhea, and an increasing rate of HIV which is spreading beyond Burmas borders.
2) Since 1996, 3,077 separate incidents of village destruction, relocation or abandonment have been documented in eastern Burma. Over a million people have been displaced from their homes in eastern Burma during this time. In 2006 in eastern Burma alone, 82,000 people were forced to leave their homes and 232 entire villages were destroyed, forcibly relocated or otherwise abandoned.
3) The increasing number of Burmese refugees and internal displaced people.
4) The Burmese military governments continuous political oppression, oppression against pro-democratic activists, violation of political rights of the people of Burma; The continuous imprisonment of politicians, including Nobel Laureate Daw Aung San Suu Kyi, and more than 1100 political prisoners;
5) The use of rape by soldiers as a political tool against ethnic women, which has been systematically un-prosecuted.
Therefore, we earnestly request the UNSC and its members:
1) To take concrete action on the Burmese military government in order to restore human rights and democracy in Burma;
2) To pressure for the immediate release of political prisoners and Daw Aung San Suu Kyi;
3) To take necessary action to respect human rights, including civil, political, social and economic rights.
With respect and high expectation of the office of the United Nations Security Council and its members, this appeal is hereby submitted by the concerned undersigned.
