BMW OWNERS IN THE U.S. PETITION FOR ADDITIONAL SAFETY FEATURE
We, the petitioners, are all BMW owners in North America. We are petitioning BMW North America to enable the use of REAR FOG LIGHTS in BMWs sold throughout the USA. In the past several weeks, national news has covered many massive traffic accidents where cars were hit in heavy fog. The availability of rear fog lights can help to prevent such accidents and this capability should be available to US owners of BMWs, just as it is in every other country that BMWs are sold in around the world.
The rear fog lights are physically present in some BMWs sold in the USA and are pre-wired into the vehicle architecture. They are disabled by (1) the deletion of a rear fog light switch and (2) a software setting in the vehicles computer. BMW makes rear fog lights available in Mini brand cars in the USA, as does Mercedes, Saab, Audi, Volvo, Porsche and other car makers.
The ability to use a rear fog light, while not legally required, is a great safety benefit. Further, we also know that the use of rear fog light is both permitted and legal in the United States.
We, therefore, formally petition BMWNA/BMW AG to, at a minimum, release a service bulletin to dealers with directions on how to activate this feature, as well as stock for sale light switches containing the rear fog light switch. We further urge that this important safety feature be included on all new BMWs sold in the U.S.
