We, the undersigned, ask Virginia Run Elementary School to eliminate the planned balloon release from their upcoming 20th anniversary celebration. Any large-scale release of balloons, even latex balloons, is an environmentally unsound practice.
Although the balloon industry claims that latex balloons are all natural, biodegradable, and break down as quickly as an oak leaf, it can still take years for a balloon to decompose. Studies have shown that a latex balloon retains its elasticity for 12 months in the ocean -- more than enough time for a sea animal to eat it. Additionally, latex balloons can travel 75 miles or more -- easily reaching the Chesapeake Bay or the Atlantic Ocean. Turtles, whales, and dolphins have been found with latex balloons in their stomachs, and birds have been found with the strings or ribbons wrapped around their beaks, legs, and bodies.
We urge Virginia Run Elementary School to be safe, kind, and responsible and not to include the balloon release in their upcoming celebration.
