Cholla Bay

As you know, the pace of development in Puerto Peсasco is astonishing. New homes, hotels, resorts and amenities are happening all around us. Although there can be advantages to such development jobs, conveniences and housing tragic and irreversible costs often occur, too.

Puerto Peсasco and nearby community Cholla Bay are located on the northern shores of the Sea of Cortйs, a rich sea home to the Vaquita, whales, a multitude of shore birds, and many other terrestrial and sea creatures.

Also, Cholla Bay, a peninsula part of the larger Adairs Bay, is home to one of the most productive wetlands in the area effectively acting as an essential nursery for wildlife. For example, the estuaries of Cholla Bay are home to the endangered Clapper Rail, and other rare birds.

The reefs off the rocky shores of Cholla Bay are nursery areas for grouper, home of a large murex snail population, and are part of a fishing reserve that local fisherman, residents and sportsmen depend on. The mountains on the reef side of Cholla Bay are populated by Ironwood trees, which are a protected species in Mexico.

Unfortunately, the costs associated with the Sandy Beach Resorts development now planned for Cholla Bay would destroy the estuary, and severely damage the reef and mountain habitats. Residents of Cholla Bay, both new and old, have been attracted to the area for its pristine natural beauty and rustic charm.

This development would obliterate characteristics that are desirable to both American and Mexican residents. Although there are many improvements that residents would support, such as modernized water and sewer systems, improved traffic flow, and better beach access, the currently proposed marina and hotels are not developments that Cholla Bay residents want.

Residents have clearly stated in recent questionnaires that they are interested in sustainable and environmentally sensitive development. Many residents have even stated that they will leave Cholla Bay if more environmental destruction occurs.
