To the Nova Scotia House of Assembly:
On February 17, 2013, a great tragedy took place off the coast of Nova Scotia when 5 young fishermen were lost at sea. The vessel "Miss Ally", returning from a fishing voyage with a crew of 5 young men, capsized in gale force winds and heavy seas.
Many search and rescue personnel from Canada and the United States braved storm force winds and high seas, pushing it to the limit to find Katlin Nickerson, Joel Hopkins, Tyson Townsend, Cole Nickerson and Billy Jack Hatfield. After 2 perilous days of searching, the search was ultimately called off.
Many coastal communities in Nova Scotia have monuments erected with lists of names of those lost while plying the waters off our coasts, often including dozens or even hundreds of names from a single community.
Making a living on the sea, whether it be from fishing, transportation, or safeguarding our coast line is filled with perils and too often ends in tragedy.
Therefore, we the undersigned, respectfully request that the third Monday in February be declared Seafarers Day in Nova Scotia for remembrance of those lost as sea and also in recognition of the contribution made to the Province of Nova Scotia by those who to make a living on the sea.
