Delfines Punta Choros

Existe un lugar en el norte de Chile, a 90 kms. de La Serena llamado Punta de Choros, una maravillosa playa, un pueblo pequeсo, una caleta que vive de la pesca, los olivos y el turismo. Allн existe una isla, llamada Isla Damas, la cual es reserva nacional, por poseer en sus aguas, delfines, ballenas, nutrias, lobos marinos, y la mayor reserva del mundo de pingьinos de Humboldt. Sus corrientes y aguas heladas hacen propicia la alimentaciуn y reproducciуn de esta fauna.

Muchos cientнficos hacen sus observaciones y estudios en ese lugar, yo misma los hacнa, estudiando las poblaciones de delfines y ballenas, claro, sin el apoyo ni del gobierno ni de grandes empresas. Pero llegу la minera canadiense Barrick, no contenta con el conflicto ambiental que ha generado en Pascua Lama, al instalar su minera afectando a los pobladores, ahora planean la instalaciуn de dos centrales termoelйctricas en la zona, y se estб determinando aceleradamente su plan de manejo para ser implementado por medio de reuniones y estudios de organizaciones que no han tenido como base los efectos directos del funcionamiento de estas termoelйctricas en la Reserva, lo que nos demuestra que el gobierno y el sector industrial y empresarial no estбn siendo capaces por sн solos de evitar los impactos en la salud , en el ambiente y de reducir los riesgos que implica la liberaciуn descontrolada al ambiente de los contaminantes, y, dicho sea de paso, sin informar a la comunidad ni a la opiniуn pъblica de lo anterior.

Los estudios que se estбn llevando a cabo, se basan, principalmente, en tomar el бrea de la Reserva Marina como un ente aislado de lo que ocurre fuera, sin tomar en cuenta de que son una serie de sistemas biolуgicos encadenados los que han determinado que esa zona sea protegida y conservada.

La empresa estб ofreciendo entre 7 y 8 millones de pesos a cada pescador de la zona para que ceda su бrea de pesca y manejo, de la cual viven, para poder establecer бreas de la termoelйctrica. Intentan comprar pescadores, y aprovecharse de su situaciуn econуmica, mintiйndoles, diciйndoles que al cambiar de бrea, de todas maneras tendrбn peces para poder trabajar.

Porque Oponerse:

No se tomу en cuenta en la presentaciуn del proyecto ante la comisiуn medio ambiental, lo que ocurre con los desechos de las termoelйctricas a menos de 20 kilуmetros de distancia de la reserva, esto puede tomarse como una grave omisiуn carente de responsabilidad cientнfica, o como un serio error en un estudio que estб orientado a proteger, conservar y hacer viable una reserva marina.

Para operar deben ingresar agua marнtima superficial del sector, que es rico en producciуn primaria de huevos y larvas de mariscos y peces, los cuales no sobrevivirбn el paso por la planta termoelйctrica, a raнz de las altas temperaturas, la exposiciуn a la presiуn hidrodinбmica por el flujo comprimido dentro de las caсerнas, y al uso de sustancias quнmicas, como anti-incrustantes.

El agua que se devuelva al mar, lo harнa con un incremento tйrmico de 6є C, lo que podrнa generar cambios en las tasas de crecimiento, conducta y fecundidad de las diversas especies, lo que a mediano plazo podrнa afectar el tamaсo de las poblaciones y el funcionamiento del ecosistema.

Ademбs del tema marнtimo, tambiйn se prevйn consecuencias atmosfйricas, ya que inevitablemente se producirбn liberaciуn de cenizas y gases tуxicos. Y, por cierto, consecuencias para los pobladores de la zona.

Entonces їde quй sirve decretar una reserva marina y poner fondos fiscales para poder tener lo antes posible su plan de manejo, si con la aprobaciуn de estos proyectos, en pocos aсos mбs no habrб nada que preservar en el бrea?

Que en Chile y en el mundo se sepa que nuevamente el gobierno avala la destrucciуn masiva medio ambiental y atenta en contra de la calidad de vida de los seres humanos, ampara a empresarios codiciosos a costa de
toda una comunidad, todo por mostrar al mundo que Chile es una potencia econуmica viable, donde invertir es un buen negocio, pero a costa de su poblaciуn y su ecosistema.

Ayъdanos a detener la implementaciуn de estas termoelйctricas, y a proteger la vida en esta maravillosa zona, firmando la peticiуn que haremos llegar a las autoridades.



A place exists in the north of Chile, 90 kms. far of La Serena, called Punta de Choros, a wonderful beach, a small village, a cove that lives of the fishing, the olive trees and the tourism. There exists an island, called Isla Damas, which is a natural reservation, for possessing in its waters, dolphins, whales, otters, sea lions, and the major population of the world, of Humboldt's penguins. Its currents and frozen waters make propitious the nourishment and reproduction of this fauna.

Many scientists do their observations and studies in this place, including myself, studying the populations of dolphins and whales, clearly, without the support of the government or of big companies. But there came the Canadian miner Barrick, not satisfy with the environmental conflict that it has generated in Pascua Lama, now they are planning the installation of two thermoelectric head offices in the zone, without reporting to the community.

The studies that are carried out, are based, principally, in taking the area of the Marine Reservation as an entity isolated of what happens out, without bearing in mind of which it are a series of biological linked systems those that have determined that this zone is protected and preserved.

The company is offering between 7 and 8 million Chilean pesos to every fisherman of the zone, in order that he yields his area of fishing and managing, of which they live, to be able to establish areas of the thermoelectric one. The company is trying to buy the fishermen, to take advantage of their economic situation, by lying, saying to them that if they change their fishing areas, they will have many other places with tons of fish, to be able to work anyhow.

Why to be opposed:

The company did not bear in mind in the presentation of the project before the environmental commission, what will happen with the tailing of the thermoelectric, that will be installed less than 20 kilometers of distance of the reservation, this is a serious omission lacking in scientific responsibility, or a serious mistake in a study that is orientated to protect, to preserve and make a marine reservation viable.

To operate, they must deposit maritime superficial water of the sector, which is rich in primary production of eggs and of seafood and fish, which will not survive the step along the thermoelectric plant, immediately after the high temperatures, the exhibition to the hydrodynamic pressure for the flow compressed inside the water tubes, and the use of chemical substances.

The water that is returned to the sea, would do with a thermal increase of 6 є C, which might generate changes in the rates of growth, conduct and fecundity of the diverse species, which might affect the size of the populations and the functioning of the ecosystem.

Besides the maritime topic, also atmospheric consequences are foreseen, since inevitably they will produce liberation of ashes and toxic gases. And, certainly, will generate negative consequences for the peoples that live the zone.

Then, їWhich is the intention of decreeing a marine reservation and putting fiscal funds for its plan of managing, if with the approval of these projects, in a few years there will be nothing to preserve in the area?

Know, in Chile and the world, that again, the government of Chile, supports the environmental massive destruction, and commits an outrage against the quality of life of the human beings, and against marine environment, protecting covetous businessmen, at the cost of the whole community, everything for showing to the world that Chile has an economic viable power, where to invest is a good business, but at the cost of its own population and their ecosystem.
