Demand Access to Naloxone Kits for Families (Lisa's Petition)

Naloxone is used to counter the effects of an opiate overdose.
Naloxone kits are currently treated as a medicine and can only be supplied on prescription to someone at risk of an opioid overdose.
We are petitioning for family members and close friends of opiate users to be able to access Naloxone Kits, after completing Naloxone Training, without needing consent from the opiate user.
Currently family members can only gain access to naloxone kits if they receive written consent from the opiate user or the opiate user gives the kits to the family member.
We believe that if family members and significant others were able to access Naloxone direclty this would reduce the shameful number of drug related deaths.
FASS (Family Addiction Support Service) provides a confidential support service to parents and family members, in Glasgow, affected by a loved one's drink or drug addiction and has been providing a unique service since 1986.
As part of GRAND (Get Real About Alcohol 'n' Drugs) Conference on 5th September 2013, a drama was performed which highlighted issues for families around accessing Naloxone in their own right.
Addiction is complicated, families are complicated, there are no easy answers but after listening to what many of our families had to say, we have set up what we will call 'Lisa's Petition'. Lisa is a fictitious daughter who died in the first FASS drama 'Chap at the Door' and is spoken of in the drama 'The Aftermath'.
Lisa could be anyone's daughter or son, brother or sister, mum or dad!
We hope this petition will allow debate of accessibility of Naloxone Kits for family members and significant others. We hope that the authorities will at least listen to the voice of the families which all to often go unheard and are often not consulted.
If you feel that family members and significant others should be able to access Naloxone Kits directly and would welcome further debate on this, please sign our petition.
